Snap Specs: Snapchat’s First MR Glasses and the Future of Mixed Reality

Snapchat has just taken a major step towards the future of spatial computing: Snap has unveiled Specs, its new augmented reality glasses featuring see-through displays, artificial intelligence and a dedicated operating system.

The launch took place during the Augmented World Expo 2026, where Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap, introduced what the company describes as a new generation of wearable computers, designed to bring AI, work, entertainment and shared experiences directly into the physical world.

What are Snap Specs?

Snap Specs are standalone AR/MR glasses designed to overlay digital content onto the real world through see-through lenses. They are not simply smart glasses with a camera and audio, like many devices already available on the market today. They are a more ambitious attempt: creating a device capable of displaying digital elements in physical space, integrating them with the environment and making them interactive.

According to Snap, Specs were created to help people create, connect, learn and work while remaining present in the real world, rather than being absorbed by a smartphone screen.

The price, however, confirms that we are still at an early stage: the glasses are available for preorder at $2,195, with a refundable $200 deposit, and shipments are expected in the autumn in the United States, the United Kingdom and France. It is a high price, far from that of a truly mass-market product. But this is not the most interesting point.

The point is that Snap is attempting to build a new form factor for computing: no longer a phone held in the hand, and no longer a fully immersive headset, but glasses capable of blending digital content with physical space.

AR or Mixed Reality?

Technically, Snap describes them as augmented reality glasses. However, the boundary between AR and Mixed Reality is becoming increasingly subtle. Traditional augmented reality overlays digital content onto the real world. Mixed Reality goes one step further: it allows those digital elements to coexist with physical space, react to the environment, be shared and manipulated, and be perceived as part of the scene. This is where devices such as Specs become interesting.

If a pair of glasses can understand the environment, display contextual content, use multimodal AI, recognise objects, enable shared experiences and transform the real world into an interface, then we are no longer talking only about AR filters. We are talking about wearable Mixed Reality. And this is precisely the direction Metagate has been working towards for years: transforming places, products, events and processes into accessible and interactive spatial digital experiences.

Why Snap is focusing on glasses

Snap is not approaching this launch from scratch. Over the years, the company has built a vast AR ecosystem through Snapchat, Lens Studio and previous generations of Spectacles. For a long time, Snap’s AR was primarily social: filters, effects, creative content and interactive lenses. Specs represent a different transition. The objective is no longer merely to augment a photograph or video. The objective is to augment everyday reality.

Snap describes Specs as a wearable computer integrated into a pair of glasses with transparent lenses, capable of understanding the world through advanced machine learning, bringing AI assistance into three-dimensional space, enabling shared games and providing flexible work tools. This is the strategic shift: AR is no longer content inside an app, but becomes a platform.

This is also the transition the market is making more broadly. Meta is working on Ray-Ban smart glasses and advanced AR prototypes such as Orion. Google and Samsung are building an XR ecosystem based on Android XR. Apple continues to explore spatial computing through Vision Pro and future lighter devices. Snap, meanwhile, is attempting to move directly towards consumer AR/MR glasses. The race has begun.

The price shows that the market is not yet mature

The $2,195 price is the figure that has generated the most discussion. It is higher than AI smart glasses without displays and lower than some premium headsets, but it still represents a price aimed at early adopters, developers, creators and technology enthusiasts. This means Specs are not yet the product that millions of people will wear every day.

However, the price should be considered in the correct context:

- It is approximately half the price of the nearly $4,000 Apple Vision Pro.

- It is dramatically lower than the reported production costs of Meta Orion, estimated at around $10,000 per unit.

Some industry analyses also highlight the current limitations: a high price, still considerable weight and a consumer market that has not yet been educated to use glasses with spatial displays in everyday life. However, every new technological category goes through a similar phase: the first smartphones were expensive, limited and not yet essential; the first headsets were heavy, complex and not widely adopted; the first AR/MR glasses will inevitably be imperfect.

There is also a dynamic that we have already seen many times throughout the history of technology: even the first iPhone seemed expensive at $500 when it launched, whereas today one can cost $1,800.

The point is not the absolute price.

The point is perceived usefulness.

An object seems expensive when people do not yet clearly understand what it is for. It becomes normal, and then necessary, when it becomes part of everyday activities, work processes, education, communication, culture, productivity and entertainment.

Our prediction is simple: there will be plenty of practical uses.

MR headsets have already been a reality since the beginning of 2024. Glasses are arriving years ahead of many forecasts. Technology is advancing much faster than expected.

The real obstacle today is not technical. It is cultural.

What changes for Mixed Reality

The arrival of Specs confirms a central point: Mixed Reality is not a niche. It is a new interface. For years, we have interacted with digital content through flat screens: computers, smartphones and tablets. Every piece of content had to be compressed into a rectangle. AR/MR glasses without AI risk being nothing more than a screen placed in front of the eyes. With AI, however, they become a contextual assistant capable of understanding what we are looking at, where we are, what we want to do and which information may be useful at that moment. Snap explicitly refers to AI assistance and tools integrated into the real world.

This creates highly practical scenarios. In a museum, the glasses can recognise an artwork and explain it. In a shop, they can display product configurations. In a company, they can guide an operational procedure. At a trade fair, they can transform a stand into a digital showroom. In healthcare, they can display data, pathways or instructions in a more natural way.

Why this news matters to companies

For companies, Specs are not important because they should be purchased tomorrow. They are important because they indicate where the market is heading.

Mixed Reality is not merely a technology for events. It is a new way of presenting information, selling products, training people and telling the stories of places.
